About Council Chronicle

Council Chronicle is an independent directory of the principal local authorities of the United Kingdom — every county, district, unitary, metropolitan and London borough council in England, the 22 principal councils of Wales, the 32 Scottish council areas and the 11 districts of Northern Ireland.

Each council has its own page with the facts that are useful when you need to know who runs what: the type of authority, the nation, region and county it belongs to, the ONS/GSS area code, the latest population estimate with earlier figures, land area and density, the year the authority was created, the administrative centre and the address of its official website.

Lists are built for comparison rather than for news: rankings by population, area and density, a page for every type of authority and every region or nation, an index of official websites by domain, and a record of district councils abolished in the reorganisations of 2009, 2019, 2020, 2021 and 2023.

All figures come from Wikidata, the free knowledge base, and are refreshed when we rebuild the site. Population estimates are those recorded with a reference year; boundaries change, so always check the council’s own website or the Office for National Statistics before quoting a number in an official context.

Electoral wards and Westminster constituencies come from the ONS Open Geography Portal lookups (2026 wards, 2024 constituencies), and every ward in England and Wales has a Census 2021 profile — residents, households, density, age, tenure, type of home and car availability — from the Office for National Statistics via Nomis, all under the Open Government Licence v3.0. Wards drawn after 2021 are built up from the census small areas (LSOAs) that ONS best-fits to them, and are marked as such.

Council offices, town halls and town and parish council offices come from business listings compiled from public map and web sources, checked October 2026 (address, website, opening hours); the council area, ward and constituency of each come from its postcode.

Council Chronicle is not affiliated with any council, the Local Government Association or the UK, Scottish, Welsh or Northern Ireland governments. Council names and website addresses are listed for reference only.
